Regional President Pat Ward, Director of Sustainable Programs for the
Colorado Department of Health and Environment Jill Cooper and VP Public
Affairs Mike Refer with Colorado's Sustainability Champion Award.
West Central Region wins Colorado's Sustainability Champion Award Aggregate Industries' West Central Region has won the State of Colorado's Sustainability Champion Award for reservoir projects at the Morrison Quarry and the Thornton / Hazeltine sand and gravel site. This is the first year for the Sustainability Champion Award, which was presented by the Governor of Colorado and the Executive Director for the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE). At the Morrison Quarry water reservoirs reclamation project, Aggregate Industries employees teamed with the Town of Morrison to provide the first mined rock quarry utilized for water storage in the Denver-Metro area. The quarry provides a 500 acre-foot (163,000 million gallons), 150 foot deep reservoir (Reservoir #1) which covers less than 7 acres. A second reservoir is planned in the current mining area that will provide an additional 1,000 acre feet of water storage and is expected to be completed in 2010. ![]() The

Allen Williams, Mayor of Morrison said, "Sustainability for the Town of Morrison is essential and our partnership with Aggregate Industries has virtually guaranteed the survival and the future of the Town of Morrison." The second award winning reservoir project is the Cooley Reservoir and Fulton Wildlife Area sand and gravel mine and processing plant. The end use reclamation of this site includes three water reservoirs for the Cities of Thornton and Arvada. Reclamation included installing a "slurry wall" (specialized mixture of clay and water) trenched to bedrock to provide a water tight storage vessel. These reservoirs will provide a total of 8,000 acre feet (2.6 billion gallons) of water to the community. "Our entire team of employees in the West Central Region has long been committed to the issue of sustainability and we have been working on these water reservoir projects for many years, even before 'Sustainability' became a buzz word," said Regional President Pat Ward. "Receiving this award recognizes the value of our commitment to these local communities, and I am very proud of our team's efforts." |
