Aggregate Industries Goes Greener with Emerald Series

Aggregate Industries Launches Emerald Series, a New Green Product Range

On Monday, May 24th, Aggregate Industries, an environmentally responsible producer of high quality aggregate and construction materials, introduced a new generation green concrete product range, Emerald Series. Emerald Series provides significant contributions to new construction and major reconstruction projects achieving Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Certification.

The construction and building materials industry is changing rapidly to reflect the increasing demand for green materials and LEED Certification. Federal, state, and local regulations and specifications are increasingly calling for new construction to be certified, and contractors and developers are in need of materials that can help ensure that their projects are sustainably built and can meet the rigors of the LEED certification process. Aggregate Industries believes in the principles of Sustainable Construction.

Emerald Series is designed to reduce the carbon footprint by using postindustrial waste, post consumer waste, recycled concrete, and locally harvested raw materials. Emerald Series is durable and cost-effective, and it possesses excellent thermal-mass characteristics. Emerald Series can help ensure that the project gains vital points needed for the LEED Certification by utilizing concrete’s multitude of green properties – from low carbon to high percentages of recycled content.

Emerald Series consists of Pervious Concrete, High Volume Slag Concrete, and High Volume Fly Ash Concrete. First, Emerald Series Pervious Concrete is designed for stormwater management. It is a mixture of hydraulic cement, coarse aggregate of smaller size, admixtures, and water. Emerald Series Pervious Concrete allows the water to percolate through the concrete into the sub-base and recharge the underground water level. Second, Emerald Series High Volume Slag Concrete is a fundamentally green material that reduces Carbon Dioxide (CO2) and is highly durable. Using Emerald Series High Volume Slag Concrete can help create energy-efficient building systems while reducing the “heat island” effect because of its lighter color. Last, Emerald Series High Volume Fly Ash Concrete is a resource-efficient, durable, and sustainable option for a variety of concrete applications. Consisting mostly of silica, alumina, and iron, Emerald Series High Volume Fly Ash creates a stronger, more durable product and reduces concrete’s environmental impact considerably.

Aggregate Industries is at the forefront of the industry in terms of environmental performance and is committed to maintaining and increasing its environmental excellence. Recently Aggregate Industries received the Boston Business Journal’s 2010 Green Business Award in the Innovation category for environmental initiatives the Company has accomplished across the Region. The Green Business Award focuses on sustainability and effective leadership in the following categories: Innovation, Invention, Design, and Workplace. Aggregate Industries was among 15 honorees receiving 2010 Green Business Awards. Aggregate Industries is the only recipient from the construction and building materials industry.
